Tips from Dr. Tanuj Nakra: How to Transition Your Skincare Routine from Winter to Spring

Dr. Tanuj Nakra provides 5 Tips on how to transition your skincare regimen as the seasons change

As the seasons change, making adjustments to your skincare routine can be confusing.

Winter's cold combined with arid conditions take a toll on our skin, leading to dryness, chapping, and a dull complexion. Careful and consistent hydration is the key to preventing these negative effects.  At AVYA, we apply the latest advances in molecular science balanced with traditional Ayurvedic ingredients with anti-inflammatory and healing properties to bring you effective, nourishing products that will leave your skin healthy and glowing.

We sat down with AVYA’s Co-Founder, Dr. Tanuj Nakra, an Austin-based, triple board-certified facial cosmetic surgeon, to get some tips on staying hydrated during the ending months of Winter into Spring.

How often should you perform your skincare routine?

Consistent daily and nightly skincare as well as possible reapplication of moisturizer during the day is critical to combating the drying effect of cooler months of winter. As we move into warmer months of Spring and Summer reapplication may not be necessary as the heightened humidity in the air will allow your skin to maintain moisture.

What is the best kind of serum to use?

Use a serum that is filled with antioxidants, peptides and key botanical extracts.  Serums with medical grade formulas are great to help tone, reduce inflammation and achieve skin radiance. A vitamin C serum that can be used on any skin type or condition, even the most sensitive skin, like AVYA’s Anti-Aging Power Serum would be my recommendation. This should be applied before you apply moisturizer regardless of season.

How can you keep your skin hydrated while the seasons are transitioning?

As mentioned earlier, switching to a lighter moisturizer during the day is a good idea during warmer months. However, during the earlier months of Spring it is still cool and dry enough to continue the use of a thicker formula. Also, an evening regimen should always contain a slightly thicker moisturizer that contains ingredients with reparative properties to help restore your skin as you sleep.

Deep moisturizing night time treatments with ingredients like Hydroxyproline, Beef Root Extract and Vitamin A can be quite beneficial in hydrating and repairing the skin. Apply a generous amount of a night time cream or mask to the face (try AVYA's intensely hydrating Night Moisturizer), and then cut out 2-inch cut squares of plastic wrap and place onto the face to help concentrate its soothing and hydrating formula. Keep the plastic wrap on for an hour and then remove. Massage any remaining cream into the skin using circular motions.

Is there any product that most people forget to include in their skincare that you feel is important?

The lips are often overlooked and especially vulnerable in the winter climate and are also easily exposed to the elements regardless of season.  AVYA's 2-in-1 Lip Treatment is designed to buff away dead skin, and it also works wonders to hydrate deeply to protect and enhance our lips throughout the year.

What is the one “must-have” in any skincare routine?

Don't forget about UV protection! Just because it is cold outside doesn’t mean the sun takes a break. More than 90% of skin aging is caused by the sun. So, whether you are inside working from home, driving to pick up your kids from school or just getting some fresh air outside, don’t forget to wear a broad-spectrum all-mineral sunscreen.

In warmer months, we tend to spend more time outside and exposed to UV Rays that can really penetrate and damage the skin. Always include products that protect your skin from the sun in your morning skincare routine.
